Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a beginner, a week spent hiking and camping in the Canadian Rockies can be a life-changing experience. This guide provides a detailed itinerary for a 7-day adventure that promises not only breathtaking views but also the chance to connect with nature like never before.

Day 1: Arrival in Banff National Park

Your adventure begins in Banff National Park, one of Canada’s most renowned parks. Arrive in the town of Banff and take some time to explore the charming shops and galleries. Afterward, head to the Banff Visitor Centre to gather information on trail conditions and safety tips. In the afternoon, take an easy hike around the picturesque Lake Minnewanka or the Emerald Lake to acclimatize to the stunning scenery. Set up your campsite at one of the local campgrounds, such as Tunnel Mountain Campground, where you can enjoy the evening under the stars.

Day 2: Johnston Canyon to Ink Pots

Start your day with a hearty breakfast, and then drive to Johnston Canyon, home to one of the most popular hikes in the Canadian Rockies. This hike is about 5.8 kilometers round trip and will take you through lush forests and along a river to the spectacular waterfalls. Take your time as you walk to the lower and upper falls, snapping photos of the cascading waters. Afterward, continue your trek to the Ink Pots, which are a series of mineral springs located in a beautiful meadow. Spend some time relaxing and soaking in the unique landscapes. Settle back at your campsite for dinner and enjoy a campfire under the clear mountain sky.

Day 3: Moraine Lake and Sentinel Pass

Hit the road early to catch the sunrise at Moraine Lake. The iconic blue waters surrounded by the Valley of the Ten Peaks are a sight you won’t want to miss. Afterward, embark on the challenging hike to Sentinel Pass. This 10-kilometer round trip hike takes about 4-5 hours to complete but rewards you with breathtaking views from the top. Spend some time at the pass to take in the beauty before descending back to Moraine Lake. After the hike, you might want to take a kayak out on the pristine waters or simply relax at the shore. Return to your campsite for a good night’s rest.

Day 4: Lake Louise and Plain of Six Glaciers

On your fourth day, visit the stunning Lake Louise. Start with a walk around the lake and enjoy breakfast overlooking the turquoise waters. Afterward, set off on the Plain of Six Glaciers hike, which is about 14 kilometers round trip. The hike offers fantastic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains, leading you to a beautiful teahouse situated at the foot of the glaciers. Treat yourself to a snack and take a moment to soak in the impressive scenery before beginning your descent. Spend another night camping in the area, taking advantage of the peaceful surroundings.

Day 5: Icefields Parkway and Wilcox Pass

Pack up camp and hit the road along the Icefields Parkway, one of the most beautiful drives in North America. Stop at key viewpoints, including the Athabasca Falls and the Columbia Icefield. After taking in the majestic sights, head to Wilcox Pass for a hike that offers incredible views of the surrounding glaciers and the majestic Mount Athabasca. This relatively easy hike is about 9.5 kilometers round trip and provides a chance to see wildlife along the way. After your hike, continue to your next camping spot near the Icefield to rest under the stars.

Day 6: Glaciers and Wildlife Viewing

Begin your day with a visit to the Columbia Icefield, where you can take a guided tour onto the Athabasca Glacier. Learning about glaciology and witnessing these ancient ice formations is a memorable experience. After your glacier tour, explore the surrounding area for any wildlife sightings. Keep an eye out for bears, elk, and mountain goats. In the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely hike around the area, soaking in the natural beauty. Find a scenic spot to set up camp for the night, engaging in stargazing as you unwind from your amazing day.

Day 7: Yoho National Park and Departure

On your final day, head to Yoho National Park, located just over the border in British Columbia. Visit the stunning Takakkaw Falls, one of Canada’s highest waterfalls, and take a short hike to Wapta Falls for another spectacular view. Spend your final hours in nature enjoying the diverse flora and fauna of the park. Make your way back to Banff for the return journey home or continue your travels in the Canadian Rockies. Reflect on the incredible experiences and the beautiful landscapes you've encountered during the week.

By following this 7-day itinerary, you’ll have the chance to experience the magic of the Canadian Rockies in depth.
